Abbeymead Court is a residential development of houses arranged around a shared courtyard garden in the very attractive town of Sherborne. The site was the former playing field of the local primary school which was relocated to a larger site nearby with improved facilities. The original local stone built main school building stands nearby and is an important Listed Building within the town’s conservation area.
The new residential development was setback away from the Listed Building to minimise its impact as well as providing public open space along an important pedestrian route in this part of the town. The courtyard arrangement of the houses is outward-looking addressing both existing and new pedestrian and vehicular access routes.
Given the vibrant local vernacular and the presence of the Listed former school building with its Victorian Gothic arches the development echoes these characteristics in the use of local materials, scale and form and the influence of the town’s beautiful honey coloured stone-built Abbey at the centre of the town.
